Freedom in Practice
Creative Development Lab
Beta Group
Instructor: Heather Tolleson
How do you transition from thinking of yourself as a student to thinking of yourself as a sculptor? When do studies become sculpture— individual works of art?
Before you worry about making great art, or even good art, the focus should be on making YOUR art. Art that is unique to your perspectives and life experiences.
Through a series of group exercises and challenges geared toward your specific needs, we will discover together the answer to these questions and more. Through this course, you will:
-
Learn what appeals to you and how to communicate those preferences to yourself and others.
-
Discover and develop your artistic style and point-of-view for your artworks.
-
Learn strategies for quieting your inner critic while working.
-
Gain confidence in giving and receiving critique.
-
Build sophisticated perspectives on your aesthetic preferences, refine your analytical eye, and practice intentional editing.
-
Build a relationship to your studio practice that feels supportive and sustainable.
I will be asking you to come with an open mind, prepared to be uncomfortable, to experiment with new techniques, and to feel like you’re getting it “wrong” (note, there’s no such thing). I have been where you are now and know that growth is a vulnerable process. I will endeavor to create the most supportive space possible for your creative expression, and you will also have the group as a community learning and growing alongside you.
I have walked numerous students through this process individually, but have never attempted it in a group setting, so note that this is a beta group testing these methods. So come be my guinea pigs for a discounted tuition as I refine this curriculum, and (good news!) we’ll all be outside our comfort zones together.
Prerequisite:
Two prior Atelier 3-D workshops or classes, comparable course of study, or history of private artistic practice.
If you're unsure of whether or not you're a good fit for this course, feel free to reach out with any questions.
